A family is the oldest community there is — and the first one this architecture was built for. Not a group account. A constellation: each person whole, sovereign, their own — and held together by explicit, visible bonds.

Grandmother's recipes and the story of how your parents met. Which vaccine the youngest had, and when. The way your father liked his tea. Families already keep shared memory across phones, chat apps and fading recollection. Here, the family node keeps the shared record under the family’s own governance and in the languages its members use.

Every link has an explicit, inspectable authority basis. Consent is required where consent is the basis; guardianship and lawful duty are bounded exceptions, never implied ownership. A school form may be shared with guardians under a declared basis; a teenager's journal is private by default; what grandmother shares with everyone, she chose to share. The architecture cannot promise the impossible — a story once told is told — but it can make every act of sharing explicit, visible, and revocable where reality permits. Where a child or dependent person is involved, protection and autonomy must both be explicit: guardianship grants limited duties; it does not turn the person’s whole inner life into family property.

Each member is a complete, sovereign community of one — the family is the links between them, not a container around them. So growing up is architecturally graceful: the child who leaves for university keeps the memories, documents and understanding that belong to them in their own node, and the bond home simply stretches — a link, not a leash. Marriages link families; moves change no ownership; and when someone dies, only what they explicitly chose to leave may remain, under the terms they set and any applicable law.

Field testingTested with our own family first

We believe systems like this must be lived in before they are offered. We field-test one opinionated implementation, sathi.ai, in our own daily life — the builder, then family, then a small community — in Nepali, Japanese, Hindi and English, with the grandparents very much included. What our own family teaches us produces hypotheses for the framework; it does not by itself validate them for every family.
